Prepare for a prompt pertaining to either of the following:

Approach A: I may ask you to compare/contrast two stories that are adjoining literary periods and show how the stories have some similar elements, but also possess elements that are related to a specific period. You will want to consider the following concepts: focus on external vs. internal events, the search for meaning vs. the acceptance of meaninglessness, the use of concrete vs. abstract details/imagery in the stories, etc.

Approach B: I may ask you to consider the use of irony in at least two stories to achieve a specific effect, such as development of characterization, setting, or even theme or meaning. I may ask you to connect that use of irony to the literary period from which the story comes, so be prepared for that eventuality. Think in terms of what role irony may play in revealing the values of the literacy period.
